Presenters and performances@ Oscars 2015

Here's the skinny on all the presenters and performances at Oscars 2015.

Awesome actors who've never won an Oscar

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp- Being an A-List celebrity who has been immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame doesn’t guarantee an Oscar. Nor does winning a Golden Globe award. Johnny Depp’s films have raked in millions at the Box Office but it’s baffling as to why the actor has never walked away with the golden statue. His performances in Sweeney Todd, Finding Neverland and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was exemplary and Depp got nominated thrice for an Oscar for all three films. But Johnny Depp hasn’t been lucky. What does it take an actor of his caliber to clinch the coveted award?

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio: He’s smart, handsome and exceptionally talented. That’s Leonardo DiCaprio for you. The actor and producer started his career with TV commercials before doing soap operas like Santa Barbara and Growing Pains. Films naturally followed. Leonardo has established himself in Hollywood with films like Titanic, Romeo + Juliet. The Beach and Catch Me If You Can to name a few. Gangs of New York, Blood Diamond, The Aviator, Inception and The Departed only added to his success. But this Golden Globe winner has never been a recipient of the prestigious Oscar award. Leonardo has been nominated thrice. Films like Blood Diamond, The Aviator and What's Eating Gilbert Grape got him an Oscar nod but not the award. Wonder what causes a talented actor to miss the judges’ eyes. If not Leonardo, then who is the Oscar award fit for?

Richard Gere

Richard Gere: Humanitarian and actor Richard Gere has never won an Oscar and the reasons are obvious. Richard Gere is a Buddhist convert and a staunch supporter of the Dalai Lama. The Pretty Woman actor was banned the Academy 20 years ago when he took to the Oscars stage and used the podium to talk against the Chinese Government. Gere is known to take the cause of Tibetans in exile. Not only was the actor banned from setting foot on the Oscar stage, but he was also banned by the Chinese government from entering China for the stance he took. The actor took to the stage this year to perform a musical with his Chicago co stars Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones and Queen Latifah. But will the Academy forgive him and concentrate on his films rather than his stance to make him eligible for the prestigious award?

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise- It comes a shock rather than a surprise that Hollywood’s highest paid and one of the most successful stars has never won an Oscar! The Mission Impossible series star, whose career spans three decades in Hollywood, is considered as one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, a feat that is difficult to accomplish. Over and over again, Tom Cruise has been voted as one of the world’s 50 most beautiful people and remains an influential figure in Hollywood. Cruise was nominated thrice for an Oscar for his roles in films like Magnolia, Jerry Maguire and Born on the Fourth of July. Did the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences think otherwise?

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt-In spite of being a heart throb for millions, an actor of Brad Pitt’s caliber has never walked away wit the golden statue. Interestingly, Pitt who has played a myriad of characters over the years has been nominated three times for an Oscar for the films The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Twelve Monkeys and Moneyball. Although Pitt has won other prestigious awards like the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for the same film (Twelve Monkeys) that also got him nominated for an Oscar, he wasn’t lucky there. It comes as a surprise as to why is one of Hollywood’s most popular and highest paid actors snubbed by The Academy?

Funniest jokes in Oscar history

Ellen DeGeneres

Before actor Neil Patrick Harris takes the stage to host the 87th Academy Awards, we take a look back at the most humorous lines uttered by its hosts in history.

Possibility No. 1: 12 Years A Slave wins best picture. Possibility No. 2: You're all racists. And now, welcome our first white presenter, Anne Hathaway! — Ellen DeGeneres (2014)

Dear Academy, I have never seen so many people with Botox in one room in my life. — Ellen DeGeneres (2014)

Django Unchained. This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence-or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, 'a date movie.' — Seth MacFarlane (2013)

So tonight, enjoy yourselves because nothing can take the sting out of the world's economic problems like watching millionaires present each other with golden statues. — Billy Crystal (2012)

We have Robert Downey Jr — an American who played an Australian playing an African American, nominated. Whereas I, who is an Australian who played an Australian in a movie called Australia, am hosting. — Hugh Jackman (2009)

Democrats do have a historic race going — Hilary Clinton vs. Barack Obama. Normally, when you see a black man or a woman president, an asteroid is about to hit the Statue of Liberty. — Jon Stewart (2008)

Clint Eastwood's a star, OK? Tobey Maguire's just a boy in tights! — Chris Rock (2005)

Oscar is, after all, 74 years old! He's almost old enough to get flowers from Anna Nicole Smith. Also, he is the only 74-year-old man in Hollywood who doesn't need Viagra to last three hours. — Whoopi Goldberg (2002)

Hosting is like making love to a beautiful woman. It's something I only get to do when Billy Crystal is out of town. — Steve Martin (2001)

This is the Academy Awards. Warning: contents may cause drowsiness; do not drive or operate heavy machinery. — David Letterman (1994)

I'm here to explain why black people will never be nominated for anything. This show is going out to 75 million people — none of them black. — Richard Pryor (1977)

Blast from Oscars past: Remember these Oscars couples?

On the biggest night in Hollywood, the stars walking the red carpet have some big decisions to make: what to wear, what to say, and maybe the most crucial decision—who to bring.

Over the years, we’ve seen the nominees bring some interesting dates to the Oscars, ranging from long time loves to short-term flings to supportive family members. Take a look at these amazing photos of couples from red carpets past.

Hollywood glam
Oscar night is all about the glamour, and these gorgeous couples took their style and grace from the silver screen to the red carpet.

Remember they dated?
Celebrity relationships can come and go in the blink of an eye. Some of Hollywood's biggest stars have been on the awards circuit for so long, we've seen them red-carpet test a number of their relationships. Did you remember that these stars were an item?

Oscar Odd Couples
Talk about a red carpet thriller! Michael Jackson made headlines for almost everything he did, but it was these Oscar dates that had people talking (and scratching their heads).

It's all relative
On Oscar night, who better to have at your side than a beloved family member? But the relative-as-red-carpet-date can be a little tricky, walking that fine line between "awwww" and "ewww."

How about cooking with wine?

Wine can add a great flavour to food during cooking. A few tips on how to not go overboard with this unusual ingredient.

I love cooking with wine. The first time I tried it was when I cooked white sauce pasta with Pinot Grigio. And let me tell you, it turned out to be awesome. It had a smooth texture coupled with a nice aroma of spices blended with wine. So, I researched more online, on how to cook with wine. What I found was extensive, coz you know, Internet has all the answers, but here, in this post I'm sharing with you some basic, but very useful tips...

Wine, conversations and cooking: A great way of enjoying food together

- Wine is a great ingredient to add to your food, if you don't want to use fatty oils or butter. Along with adding tons of flavour to a dish, it also give it a lot of moisture.

- If you are baking pastries, add wine instead of butter. You will get a wonderful light texture for your pastry, plus it will adds many distinct layers of flavours that you won't get otherwise.

- Avoid cooking with sweet wines. Instead, go for dry wines in white or red, because those don't contain nearly as much sugar. When you cook with a sweet wine, the dish will turn out to be extra sweet, because the wine is already full of sugar.

- Whenever you are cooking with any kind of alcohol, you must give it time to burn off, or your whole dish will tastes very alcoholic. So add wine at the beginning of the dish so that it can infuse and mix with all the meats and vegetables.

Food for thought :)

Grow your hair: Vital vitamins for quick hair growth

1. Vitamin A:

Vitamin A also plays an important role in hair growth. It keeps your hair black and shiny. Vitamin A contains Antioxidants that moisturize the scalp and prevent the hair from drying out. Vitamin A helps in strengthening and thickening of the hair.
Foods Rich In Vitamin A:

  • Sweet Potatoes and Carrots1
  • Liver1
  • Egg yolk
  • Milk
  • Spinach
  • Dried Apricots
  • Mangoes

2. Biotin Or Vitamin B71:

Biotin is called as the H vitamin and also ‘hair growth’ vitamin by people around the world. It is the one the 12 of the Vitamin B family and favourite of all the hair growth vitamins. It repairs brittle hair and improves the health and texture of the hair.
Biotin is known to work wonders on hair volume and thickness. It aids in the production of fatty acids within the cells, the growth of cells, and many other important processes that involve amino acids and fats. Amino acids, as we know are the building blocks of proteins. Plus they play an important role in the process of glucogenesis too.
Due to its very many important functions, the result of sufficient biotin intake results in the folllowing
  • Rapid increase in the growth rate of your hair
  • Gaining thicker hair with greatly multiplied volume
  • Straightening of hair
Food Rich In Biotin:
  • Eggs
  • Yeast
  • Cauliflower
  • Raspberries
  • Bananas
  • Walnuts
  • Almonds

3. Vitamin B12:

As the name suggests, this one is also from the Vitamin B family too! And it is very essential to prevent hair loss. This aids in the absorption of iron to the body without which you can lose hair, due to iron deficiency.

Foods Rich In Vitamin B12:
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Whey powder
  • Milk
  • Yoghurt

4. Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is a hair growth vitamin, that has the ability to cure premature greying of hair and hair dryness efficiently. Daily intake of vitamin C through food items, or supplements is necessary to maintain the health of your hair.
Foods Rich In Vitamin C:
    • Lemons
    • Guavas
    • Mandarins
    • Strawberries

5. Vitamin E:

This is another vital vitamin for hair growth, as it beats all dry and rough hair troubles! It locks in moisture and protects your hair from drying out, and keeps it shiny. Apart from this, it also keeps the scalp healthy and promotes blood circulation.
Foods Rich In Vitamin E:
  • Almonds
  • Fish
  • Milk
  • Peanuts
  • Cooked spinach
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Dried herbs

6. Folic Acid:

This is another miracle worker of the vitamin B group, or we would prefer to call it “the hair vitamins”. This vitamin plays an important role in making your hair thicker and shinier while it adds moisture. It also helps in fighting away graying of hair.
Foods Rich In Folic Acid:
Usually, any source that gives you vitamin B, will also have folic acid as a component. But if you feel the need for supplements, then a vitamin B complex is appropriate. Other than this, all whole wheat grains and cereals contain folic acid. So now you can go ahead and consume carbohydrates, without any guilt!
It is now obvious that we need vitamins for healthy hair. But there are two other nutrients that we cannot avoid mentioning here, for we have said that vitamins aid in the absorption of it.
They are:
  • Iron
  • Proteins
a. Iron:
Researchers have found that conditions like alopecia, severe hair loss and breakage are caused due to iron deficiency. A proper amount of iron every day regulates blood circulation and increases the haemoglobin level in the body. Not only that, it will definitely help in re-growth of your hair.
Foods Rich In Iron:
    • Red meat
    • Green leafy vegetables
    • Turkey
    • Beans
    • Dried fruits
b. Proteins:
Proteins are essential for the hair structure giving you lustrous looking hair. Hence, iron is required to strengthen the roots of the hair. Without these strengthening agents, your hair will be left dull and lifeless, often prone to split ends and falling!
Foods rich in proteins:
  • Sprouts
  • Milk
  • Paneer and many more!
It is sometimes very hard to find the natural sources of these vitamins and that is when you need to consider the use of supplements. Supplements are invariably designed differently for men and women, as the needs and quantities vary. These are basically a mixture of various vitamins and minerals in the right proportions, to ensure a healthy and nutritious diet.

Pre- Natal Vitamins:

These are the same as any vitamin complex supplement given to women. The only addition being, that it has an additional dose of iron and folic acid. As Iron is said to carry oxygen to the roots, and deficiency of this causes severe hair loss problems.
Viviscal:
This supplement has a high content of vitamin C and omega 3 fatty acids. Experts that say that it works miracles!
Nourage:
This is a vitamin supplement really, but it does have a healthy dose of keratin which is the key to the building up of hair follicles. No harm in trying this out either!
Not just topical hair treatments but inclusion of a nutritious diet plan in your hair care routine, will ensure that you have the lustrous tresses that you have always desired. Consult your dietician before starting any vitamin supplements. Good luck!

It's time for some geriaction

Combats, encounters, car chases, gunshots, explosions, punches, kicks, blood and sweat with some good guys and their foes thrown in; the geriaction (action from old dudes) subgenre has exploded on the silver screen and it has exploded big time.

Ever since The Expendables came out in 2010 and earned $274m worldwide, geriaction movies have been on the rise, giving a fresh lease of life to the action icons of the 80’s and 90’s like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Liam Neeson, who were slowly being side-lined by younger action stars like Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

And what do these trigger-happy old timers do? They go on and do more movies and make more money. Now who would have thought how serious Arnold was when he said, ‘I’ll be back’ in his cyborg avatar in The Terminator back in 1984. Now almost 30 years later, Arnie is set to star in Terminator 5 – Genisys.

The best thing of all – just like Arnold, there are many other sexagenarians who are giving him company and kicking some ass. Here’s a look at some of them:

Liam Neeson – 62

Neeson, a late bloomer in action, has often been credited for creating the geriaction subgenre with his movie Taken in 2008. He was 56 then. In Taken 2, released in 2012, a much older Neeson is seen extricating himself from a set of chains before taking down an army of AK-47-wielding baddies. Last seen in The A-Team, Non-Stop and Clash Of The Titans, Neeson’s latest is Taken 3.

What makes him tick – Neeson looks smart and slick even while doing chokeholds.

Sylvester Stallone – 68

Rocky, Rambo, Carter, Robert Rath, Judge Dredd and Savage – the man needs zero introduction. We could go on and on, yet chances are you’ve seen Sly in more films than you can remember. Even after all this, The Italian Stallion is far from being done with action. Showing his action prowess in projects like The Expendables 1, 2& 3, Bullet To The Head and Escape Plan in 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively, the 68-year-old star is ready to kick some ass in his upcoming Rocky movie.

What makes him tick – Less talk, more action, that’s Sly for you.

Harrison Ford – 72

Indy Jones, Han Solo, Jack Ryan – yes, we are referring to Harrison Ford and his best action avatars. While Ford was last seen kicking some alien butt alongside a much younger counterpart (Daniel Craig) three years back in 2011 release Cowboys & Aliens, he is totally up for doing the 5th installment of his hit franchise – Indiana Jones. He was seen last year in Stallone’s Expendables 3.

What makes him tick – Just look at him. Yeah, ok, let’s see how tough you look when you are 72.

Arnold Schwarzenegger – 67

The most active actor, apart from Stallone, in this group of sexagenarians is undoubtedly our Last Action Hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Seen in adrenaline pumping movies like The Expendables 1, 2 & 3, The Last Stand and The Escape Plan, this year Arnie will be seen in Terminator 5.

What makes him tick – Can you even imagine any other actor instead of Arnie as a cyborg in the Terminator series? He is living proof that body builders can act too.

Soon to become a part of this elite group are action stars like Bruce Willis and Jackie Chan. At the age of 59, Willis gave us two major action hits in 2013, Red 2 and Die Hard 5. Having managed to play the part of daredevil John McClane for 25 years straight in the Die Hard franchise, Willis now wants to do “one final Die Hard movie – Die Hard 6 – before finally hanging that white vest up for good.”

Fifty-nine-year-old Jackie Chan, who was last seen in CS12 and Police Story 2013, is now gearing up for another action comedy, Skiptrace. Did anyone say Jackie was retiring from action films?

With all these actors looking fit as a fiddle, showcasing their toned bodies and pumped up muscles in more and more action films, guess there is still time before they hang up their boots and say, ‘Hasta la vista, baby.’

So, who is your favorite action hero of all time?
